Oceanport is one of the trickiest mosquito environments in our service area, and we've spent a lot of time figuring out exactly what works there. The borough sits on the Shrewsbury River with extensive tidal marsh frontage, the old Fort Monmouth grounds to the west, and Monmouth Park racetrack with all its drainage features. Every one of those is a mosquito amplifier.
Oceanport gets two distinct mosquito pressures: salt-marsh species from the Shrewsbury River tidal flats, and the more familiar Asian tiger and house mosquitoes from the inland residential blocks. The salt-marsh mosquitoes are aggressive, fly long distances, and bite all day — they're the reason a lot of Oceanport homeowners say their yard is unusable in July and August even when they don't have any obvious standing water on their own property.
The old Fort Monmouth land has been undergoing redevelopment for years, and the drainage and vegetation conditions there fluctuate. Properties on the borough's western edge sometimes see spikes of mosquito activity that track to changes happening on the fort grounds.
For river-frontage properties, we do heavier perimeter and resting-site treatments because the marsh source is producing a constant flow of adult mosquitoes that will keep flying in. For inland blocks, the standard barrier program works well. Either way, we do a careful yard inspection to find every breeding source on your own property — even small ones produce big hatches.
Tick pressure in Oceanport is most concentrated on properties along the wooded sections near Eatontown Creek and the Fort Monmouth back acres. We handle those with granular tick treatment every 60 days through the season.
